Christmas Present

My boyfriend has mentioned that he really wants to start making sushi, so for christmas i am planning to create a beginners guide to sushi for him. I've never my sushi myself though, so have no idea what to include. I thought about buying him a recipe book, but it lacked that personal touch, i would much rather create my own one based on tried and tested recipes. If anyone has any simple recipes that i could include i would be really grateful, as many of the ones that I have found online seem rather complicated, or there are hundreds of different ways to make the same thing, so i would really like know what actually tastes good!

Hi All,

Just joined and wanted to say hi!

I found sushisushi by searching for Japanese food on the web and met Stuart at his office in Barnsley which luckily for me is only 10 mins down the road from where I live

I am half Japanese and half Liverpudlian (The Japanese half coming from my dad) so have a good idea how Japanese food should taste.

My brother also owns a Japanese restaurant in Liverpool (Check out my review of Etsu in the sushi bars section).

Hi All,

Thought I would post my experience of eating at Etsu Japanese restaurant in Liverpool. (Although I maybe a bit biased as my brother owns the restaurant!)

I went last Tuesday and had for starters Kapa Maki rolls, Gyozas and Kara-age and for mains I had Katsu Curry. Absolutely delicious - I could just about walk after eating all the food!

The food was prepared fresh by the two Japanese chefs who were recruited from Japan especially for the restaurant and it is reasonably priced.

Asahi beer on draught.

Staff are really friendly and will help you if you have any problems deciding what to eat, or understanding the menu.
Atmosphere is really cosy and if you want experience a heated Japanese toilet seat this is the place to go!

Don't take my word for it though, go and visit it yourself

this is very cool! Great retro looking sushi making game. You get to run a sushi conveyor resaurant and make sushi for all your customers. How cool is that!

Buy rice cooker or saucepan?

Is it a question of skill or not? Some people prefer to use a rice cooker to cook rice as a pose to cooking in a saucepan even if they're quite capable of cooking rice well any way.

Most restaurants and take sways use rice cookers to get consistency in their rice and to keep it warm and stop the rice from drying out. So my question is how many of you use a rice cooker vs traditional way of cooking rice?

Just a quick note to thank SushiSushi for such a fast service as I receieved my knives, et al, yesterday morning. Great looking set and I was surprised how light they were. I will be using them tonight in anger for the first time - for making sushi of course.

Just read on one of your links about this subject... I was horrified to hear that I use too much wasabi - I love it and didn't relalise you should use as much as I do nevermind.

Another site also helped with the slicing of the rolls I make I now do 3 cuts to get 6 rolls from one nori

Also good to hear that this is finger food so you don't have to use chopsticks (although I am very good with chopsticks it's a lot easier with your fingers).

Have you seen the sushi they serve in the film Machine Girl finger food indeed.

Will the UK ever eat fish again?

Seeing as we're an island, you'd think we'd eat more fish. I mean sure we have it obliterated with greasy chips on the side every now and again. But we were a great fish eating nation.

Geographically we are very similar to Japan who are big fish eaters. We're a smallish island with a massive sea resource. But instead we want to eat battery reared chickens instead.

Do you think we'll ever go back to the good ol' days of kippers for breakfast?

It bugs the hell out of me. We have to deal with that all the time in the sushi world.

How can you know it's horrible if you have never tried it?
