Recipe: Delicious Japanese Pizza Style Tofu!

January 28, 2009

In Japan, they really don't eat pizza with the same gusto that we do! However, there are pizza takeaways, and they offer up some weird and wonderful flavours too, like unagi (eel) toppings and nori for example. Often okonomiyaki is referred to as Japanese pizza, but this time we're going to share our own exciting fusion recipe!

Plus we've decided to use Tofu as the base, making this 'pizza' protein rich, and low in carbs.

But don't worry, this pizza tastes anything but healthy!

You Will Need

  • 1 Pack of Firm Tofu
  • 50g Sesame Seeds
  • 1 Sheet of Nori
  • Tomato Sauce Pizza Topping
  • 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 100g Grated Mozzarella
  • 1/4 Cup Corn Flour
  • Handful Shiitake Mushrooms
  • 1 Tsp Chilli Flakes

Method

  • Remove the tofu from the packet and drain away the liquid. Place in between 2 pieces of kitchen roll, and weight down with tins and books to flatten. Leave for about 30 mins to flatten the tofu and remove any excess moisture. You should be left with firm, flat tofu pizza bases!
  • Now prepare a wok and fill with 1 inch of vegetable oil. Heat up.
  • Meanwhile coat your tofu in corn flour, chilli flakes and sesame seeds. It should adhere well to the sticky tofu without any need for egg, but use egg if you are having trouble.
  • Deep fry the tofu sheets until they are crisp.
  • Now heat the oven to 200c. Prepare a baking tray and line it with baking paper.
  • Mix a little soy sauce into the tomato pizza sauce, then top the tofu with the sauce and cheese.
  • Add sliced shiitake and small flakes of nori. Bonito flakes are also delicious!
  • Bake for about 10 mins until the cheese is golden brown.
  • Optional toppings also include thinly sliced pork or chicken covered in tonkatsu sauce. You can also try replacing the tomato sauce with tonkatsu sauce, and dressing with Japanese mayonnaise.
