How to Make Matcha Green Tea Madelines

Green tea is one of the most delicious and simple ways to get hydrated and fill your body with anti-oxidants, which have been studied due to their possible connections with fighting cancer and helping aid weightloss!

But sometimes you don't always fancy a cup of tea - perhaps you fancy a treat instead! Did you know, green tea is a fantastic, delicate flavour to add to cakes and pastries?

This week we're sharing a recipe for matcha green tea madelines - madelines are traditionally french, but the Japanese obsession with french patisseries is strong - there are plenty of beautiful bakeries in Japan, including the famous French macaron maker Laudree.

Here's what you will need:

  • 100g Softened Butter
  • 2 Eggs
  • 120g Sugar
  • 120g Flour
  • 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
  • 30ml Brewed and cooled matcha green tea
  • 1 Tsp Matcha Powder + 1/4 Tsp for Glaze
  • A little Icing Sugar
  • Lime Juice
  • a Madeline Tin

If you do not have a madeline tin, this recipe can be made just as well with a muffin tin.


  • Take a piece of kitchen roll and dampen it with vegetable oil, then coat the madeline tin with the oil. This stops the cakes sticking.
  • Pre-heat the oven to 220C
  • Melt the butter in the microwave then allow to cool down to room temperature.
  • Meanwhile, beat together the sugar and butter until the mixture becomes pale and fluffy. This might take a while by hand so consider using an electric mixer.
  • Sift together the flour and baking powder in a seperate bowl.
  • Add the eggs and the flour to the mixture in alternate turns to the butter mix, stirring in between each addition.
  • Add the tsp of matcha powder to the 30ml of green tea, then combine into the main mixture.
  • Pour the batter into the madeline tin. It should take just 10 mins in the oven.
  • Leave to cool before serving. You can also add a glaze by mixing matcha, lime and icing sugar together until you get a dribbly consistency.
