Japanese Prawn Cocktail Recipe

Here's our take on the classic Christmas and summertime prawn cocktail recipe. It's a fresh dish that really lends it's self to Japanese food products. You'd be surprised how much some simple changes to the classic prawn cocktail recipe improves and elevates this humble dish.

Japanese Prawn Cocktail

INGREDIENTS - MAKES 8 PORTIONS

METHOD

Cut the little lettuce in half and place in ice-cold water to crisp it up.
place the wakame in a bowl, add tap water and leave to soak for 10 mins. It will grow in size up to 10 times!
Cut the lemon in half. Squeeze the juice from one half and slice the other half into 8 sections.

Drain the lettuce and wakame and pat dry with kitchen paper. Place chopped lettuce, wakame, sesame dressing, prawns, half of the sesame seeds in a bowl and mix.

Arrange the unchopped leaves in martini glasses or small bowls.

Add the sauce mixture on top of the lettuce. Evenly distribute the sesame prawn cocktail mix this across all portions.

To arrange the topping first start with the reserved prawns, add a small drizzle of fresh lemon, then a pinch of roasted sesame seeds, then finally a pinch of shichimi togarishi chilli and tuck the lemon wedge to one side as a garnish.

Japanese Prawn Cocktail

There you have it. A simple Japanese style take on the humble festive prawn cocktail. This elevates the dish and makes it a bit more special. Below are some of the products we used to make this dish:
