Tofu is a popular ingredient in Asian cooking and something we should utilise more in the UK; tofu is a low-fat source of protein which is an ideal occasional or frequent replacement for meat in your dishes. Tofu isn't just a vegetarian substitute either; its unique texture and ability to soak up flavours in marinades makes it perfect for adding to meat dishes or enjoying on its own.
Morinaga tofu is long-life, so if you keep it sealed in the packet in the right storage environment it will last a great while, so you can bulk buy this ingredient if you use it often. Morinaga's tofu is also made from non-GM soybeans, contains 0% cholesterol and is lactose-free, making it a great versatile ingredient for many diets and lifestyles.
Tofu should be removed from the packaging and placed between kitchen roll, then layered with something heavy to squeeze out excess water before cooking in most instances. Tofu is very spongy and the weighting process will help it absorb new flavours and not fall apart when cooking.
You can use tofu as you would use most fish or meats, but remember it has quite a bland and delicate flavour before it is marinated. Try putting it in a zip-lock bag in a marinade the night before in the fridge, and you'll have delicious tofu ready to go the next day!
Tofu can be breaded or battered too and is great in Katsu curries.
