The everyday Japanese one-cup: Hakutsuru Maru, soft and easy, in a 200ml glass you peel open and drink.

Maru (まる) is Hakutsuru's mainstream brand and one of the best-selling sakes in Japan. This is the standard Maru in the classic one-cup format: a futsu-shu (everyday table sake) made with 100% domestic rice in Hakutsuru's soft, umami-led house style. The 200ml cup needs no glass and no opener. Peel the lid and drink it chilled, or stand it in hot water to warm it. For the pure-rice version, see the Maru Junmai cup.

Why Chefs Choose This

  • A household name: Maru is Hakutsuru's flagship everyday brand and a fixture in Japan
  • Soft house style: smooth, rounded and easy-drinking, built to go with food
  • 100% domestic rice: made entirely with Japanese rice
  • Single serve: a sealed 200ml cup, no glass, flask or opener needed

How to Serve

  • Chilled: 10 to 15°C straight from the cup for a clean, fresh pour
  • Warmed (kan): 40 to 45°C in a bath of hot water for a comforting warm sake
  • On the go: picnics, travel, festivals and single servings
  • With food: a smooth pour for yakitori, tempura and everyday Japanese dishes

Maru (まる) means circle, and it is Hakutsuru's everyday brand, built on a soft, umami-forward style made to drink well day in, day out. The one-cup (ワンカップ) format, a single-serving glass with a peel-off lid, is a Japanese institution: the sake you pick up at a station kiosk or convenience store, ready to drink anywhere. Hakutsuru (白鶴) has brewed in Nada, Kobe, since 1743.

What is a one-cup sake?

A one-cup is a single 200ml serving of sake in its own glass tumbler with a peel-off lid. There is no need for a separate cup, a flask or an opener: you peel the lid and drink. It is the sake of trains, festivals and picnics, and because each cup is sealed and portioned it is also handy for trying a style without committing to a full bottle. This one is the classic everyday Maru.

What is the difference between this and the Maru Junmai cup?

This standard Maru is a futsu-shu, an everyday table sake with a little brewing alcohol added, and is the lighter, classic style. The Maru Junmai cup is made from rice, water and koji only, giving a slightly fuller, pure-rice character. Choose this one for the lightest everyday pour, or the junmai for a touch more body.

Can I serve it warm?

Yes. Its soft style warms well to around 40 to 45°C, which suits colder weather, and it is equally good chilled. To warm a one-cup, peel the lid and stand the cup in a bath of hot water for a few minutes rather than microwaving it, for a gentle, even result.

How should I store it?

Keep sealed cups in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight. There is no part-bottle to manage: chill and drink. Once peeled, it is meant to be drunk straight away, which is the point of the format.
