This porcelain small bowl is 88mm across and 43mm high, with straight, slightly rounded sides like a barrel. It is glazed in celadon, a pale green-blue that looks cool and calm next to food.
Why Chefs Choose This
- A calm colour: celadon suits delicate food such as tofu, white fish and pickles
- Barrel walls: upright sides keep food contained and look tidy in a row
- Porcelain: a fine, dense body with a smooth feel
- Easy to set: compact enough for every place at the table
How to Use
- Chilled tofu: hiyayakko with ginger, spring onion and soy
- Pickles and sides: a small serving of tsukemono or namul
- Dipping sauce: tsuyu for tempura or cold soba
- Desserts: panna cotta, jelly or a scoop of ice cream
Celadon (青磁, seiji) is a glaze coloured by a small amount of iron and fired in a kiln starved of oxygen, which turns it green to blue-green rather than brown. It was perfected in China and Korea and has been prized in Japan for centuries, especially for tea and for serving food in summer, when its cool tone is most welcome.
What is celadon?
Celadon is a family of glazes that fire to pale green, blue-green or grey-green. The colour comes from iron in the glaze reacting in a reduction firing. It is one of the oldest high-fired glazes in East Asia, and its soft, jade-like tone is why it has been used for fine tableware for so long.

Will the celadon shade vary?
Slightly. Celadon depends on how the glaze reacts with the kiln atmosphere, so pieces can range a little between green and blue-green, and the colour gathers deeper where the glaze is thicker.
Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
When will my pre-order arrive?
This bowl is on a container due in the UK in early November 2026. Order now to reserve one, and we will send it out once the stock has landed and been checked in. If the arrival date moves, we will let you know.
