Mino Ware, Black Matte Plate, 190x26mm
190 x 26mm: a matte black plate that turns food into the focal point.
Pre-order: arriving in the UK in late October 2026
This Mino ware plate is 190mm across and 26mm high, glazed a flat, matte black. It has no shine to compete with the food, so colour, texture and the shape of a plated dish all stand out.
Why Chefs Choose This
- Maximum contrast: greens, reds and whites look vivid on black
- No glare: a matte surface photographs cleanly under any light
- A working size: 190mm handles starters, sides and small mains
- A shallow rim: 26mm keeps sauces in without hiding the food
How to Use
- Plated starters: sashimi, tataki or a composed salad
- Sushi: a few pieces of nigiri or a cut roll
- Grilled dishes: yakitori, grilled vegetables or a small steak
- Desserts: matcha cake, mochi or fruit
Black glazes have a long history in Mino, where potters in the late sixteenth century made the black Setoguro tea bowls. Modern matte blacks carry that taste for dark, quiet surfaces onto everyday plates. Mino ware (美濃焼) comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, around towns such as Tajimi and Toki, and is Japan's largest ceramic tableware tradition, with more than a thousand years of kiln history behind it.
Why do chefs like black plates?
Black makes colour look brighter, so fresh fish, herbs, citrus and sauces stand out, and the matte finish removes glare in both the dining room and photographs. At 190 x 26mm this plate is a flexible size for a starter or a small main.

Does matte black show marks?
Matte glazes can pick up faint grey cutlery marks more readily than gloss, and they usually clean off with a gentle non-scratch cleaner. We will add the maker's care guidance when it arrives.
Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
When will my pre-order arrive?
This plate is on a container due in the UK in late October 2026. Order now to reserve one, and we will send it out once the stock has landed and been checked in. If the arrival date moves, we will let you know.
