Black glazes have been part of Mino since the late sixteenth century, when its kilns produced the black Setoguro tea bowls. A matte black serving plate brings that sober colour into everyday service, where it frames food rather than competing with it. Mino ware (美濃焼) comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, around towns such as Tajimi and Toki, and is Japan's largest ceramic tableware tradition, with more than a thousand years of kiln history behind it.
How much will a 242mm plate hold?
At 242mm across it is close to a standard dinner plate in size but lower and flatter, which makes it a good sharing platter. Expect it to take around a dozen pieces of nigiri, or a main course for one with room for garnish. The 21mm height keeps sauces from running off without hiding the food.

Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
