Matcha is whisked in a wide bowl, the chawan (茶碗), and Mino has been central to tea bowls since the late sixteenth century, when its kilns produced the Shino, Oribe, Kiseto and Setoguro wares prized by tea masters. Mino ware comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramic tableware region.
What makes a good matcha bowl?
Width to whisk and depth to stop the tea from splashing. A matcha bowl usually sits around 110 to 130mm across and 70 to 90mm high. At 120 x 75mm this one is right in that range, with space for a chasen to move in the brisk back-and-forth motion that creates foam.

Do I need a whisk?
For traditional matcha, yes. A bamboo chasen gives the best foam. Sift 1 to 2g of matcha into the bowl, add about 70ml of water at 70 to 80°C, and whisk in a quick zig-zag until the surface is frothy.
Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
