Kiln change, or yōhen (窯変), is the name for colour and texture changes that happen during firing, as flame, ash and heat move unevenly through the kiln. Potters prize it because it cannot be fully controlled: every piece comes out a little different. Mino ware (美濃焼) comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, around towns such as Tajimi and Toki, and is Japan's largest ceramic tableware tradition, with more than a thousand years of kiln history behind it.
What does kiln change mean?
Kiln change (yōhen) describes the variations a glaze picks up during firing, from where a piece sits in the kiln to how flame and heat reach it. On this plate it shows as shifts between navy and lighter blue. It means each plate is unique, and a set looks varied rather than identical.

Will my plates match each other?
They will match in shape and size, and all will be blue-navy, but the tones and markings from the kiln will differ from plate to plate. That variation is what the glaze is known for.
Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
