Mino Ware, Carved-Tokusa Black Large Shallow Bowl, 128x58mm

£16.99

128 x 58mm: a large shallow black bowl with carved tokusa stripes you can feel as well as see.

Pre-order: arriving in the UK in late October 2026

This Mino ware bowl is 128mm across and 58mm high, glazed black over carved vertical tokusa lines. The carving gives the surface texture and a good grip, and the glaze pools and thins over the ridges.

Why Chefs Choose This

  • Carved texture: stripes you can feel, and a secure hold
  • Larger rice-bowl size: 128mm for a generous portion of rice or a small donburi
  • Black shows off food: white rice, egg and pickles stand out
  • Quietly striking: pattern in the form, not the colour

How to Use

  • Rice: a generous portion of rice with a set meal
  • Donburi: oyakodon, tendon or a small poke bowl
  • Soup: tonjiru or a thick miso soup
  • Salads and sides: dressed greens, noodle salad or kimchi

Tokusa (木賊) is the Japanese name for horsetail, the jointed, reed-like plant, and tokusa patterns are the upright stripes that imitate its stems. It is one of the oldest and plainest decorative motifs in Japanese ceramics and textiles. On this bowl the stripes are carved into the clay before glazing, so the black glaze thins on the ridges and gathers in the grooves. Mino ware (美濃焼) comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, around towns such as Tajimi and Toki, and is Japan's largest ceramic tableware tradition, with more than a thousand years of kiln history behind it.

How is this different from a standard rice bowl?

It is larger and shallower. At 128 x 58mm it takes more rice than a standard bowl, or a small donburi, while staying easy to eat from. The carved tokusa stripes give it texture and grip, which also makes it a good choice for a bowl that gets handled a lot.

Will the black look the same all over?

Not quite, and that is the appeal. The glaze runs thinner over the raised ridges and pools in the grooves, so the stripes show in slightly different tones of black from bowl to bowl.

Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?

We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.

When will my pre-order arrive?

This bowl is on a container due in the UK in late October 2026. Order now to reserve one, and we will send it out once the stock has landed and been checked in. If the arrival date moves, we will let you know.
