Cherry blossom (sakura, 桜) and maple (momiji, 紅葉) are the two great seasonal images in Japan, one for spring viewing and one for autumn colour. Putting them together on one piece is a traditional way of celebrating the changing year. Mino ware (美濃焼) comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, around towns such as Tajimi and Toki, and is Japan's largest ceramic tableware tradition, with more than a thousand years of kiln history behind it.
Can I make matcha in this bowl?
Yes, for a casual bowl. At 115 x 54mm it is shallower and smaller than a formal matcha bowl, but there is room to whisk a single serving. It is just as useful for rice, a side dish or a dessert, which is why we call it a shallow tea bowl rather than a matcha bowl.
