Nashiji (梨地) means pear-skin ground. The name comes from the fine, speckled surface of the Japanese nashi pear, and it is used across Japanese crafts, from lacquer to ceramics, for finishes with a soft, grainy texture. Mino ware (美濃焼) comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, around towns such as Tajimi and Toki, and is Japan's largest ceramic tableware tradition, with more than a thousand years of kiln history behind it.
What is a nashiji finish?
Nashiji means pear-skin ground. It describes a finely speckled, slightly grainy surface that looks like the skin of a nashi, the round Japanese pear. On this plate it comes in a warm light brown, with the texture giving the plate more interest than a flat glaze.
