Mino Ware, Obi-Tokusa Red Shallow Rice Bowl, 110x60mm

£13.99

110 x 60mm: a shallow rice bowl banded with red tokusa stripes, bright but still classic.

Pre-order: arriving in the UK in late October 2026

This Mino ware rice bowl is 110mm across and 60mm high, with a band (obi) of red tokusa stripes around it. The shallow shape makes rice easy to eat with chopsticks, and the red band gives a plain bowl of rice some life.

Why Chefs Choose This

  • Rice-bowl sizing: 110mm holds a standard serving of rice
  • Easy with chopsticks: the shallow shape means no digging for the last grains
  • A band of colour: red stripes lift the table without overpowering food
  • A classic pattern: tokusa is one of Japan's oldest motifs

How to Use

  • Rice: a daily bowl of plain or mixed rice
  • Ochazuke: rice with tea or dashi poured over
  • Small donburi: a light oyakodon or tamago-kake gohan
  • Soup or sides: miso soup, salad or simmered vegetables

Tokusa (木賊) is the Japanese name for horsetail, the jointed, reed-like plant, and tokusa patterns are the upright stripes that imitate its stems. It is one of the oldest and plainest decorative motifs in Japanese ceramics and textiles. Obi (帯) means sash or band: here the stripes run in a band around the bowl rather than covering it. Mino ware (美濃焼) comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture, around towns such as Tajimi and Toki, and is Japan's largest ceramic tableware tradition, with more than a thousand years of kiln history behind it.

What does obi-tokusa mean?

Tokusa is the horsetail plant, and a tokusa pattern is a set of upright stripes like its stems. Obi means sash or band. So obi-tokusa is a band of tokusa stripes around the bowl, here in red. It is a traditional pattern that looks equally at home in a home kitchen or a restaurant.

Is it a standard rice bowl size?

Yes. Around 110 to 120mm is a typical Japanese rice bowl, and this one is on the shallow side, which makes it easy to eat from with chopsticks.

Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?

We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.

When will my pre-order arrive?

This bowl is on a container due in the UK in late October 2026. Order now to reserve one, and we will send it out once the stock has landed and been checked in. If the arrival date moves, we will let you know.
