Shino (志野) is a thick white glaze made largely from feldspar, and it was developed at the Mino kilns in the late sixteenth century, making it one of the first white glazes produced in Japan. Red Shino (aka-shino) comes from an iron-rich slip or clay under the glaze, which fires through as orange and red. Shino tea bowls are among the most celebrated in Japanese ceramics. Mino ware comes from the Tono area of Gifu Prefecture.
What is Red Shino?
Shino is a thick, milky feldspar glaze that originated in Mino. When it goes over an iron-bearing slip or clay, the iron flashes through as warm orange, red or rust, giving Red Shino. The surface often shows small pinholes and soft variations, which tea lovers value as part of its character.

Are the small holes in the glaze a fault?
No. Shino glazes often show fine pinholes and a slightly uneven surface where gas escapes during firing. It is a well-known feature of the glaze, and part of why no two Shino bowls look alike.
Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
