This Mino ware rice bowl is 150mm across and 70mm high, decorated with a lapis-blue arabesque in the Ryukyu style. It is a generous size, suited to donburi, poke bowls and soups as well as rice.

The Ryukyu name looks south to Okinawa, once the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose pottery (yachimun) is known for bold, generous decoration. The arabesque is karakusa (唐草), the scrolling vine pattern that travelled to Japan along the Silk Road and has been a favourite on Japanese tableware ever since. This piece is Mino ware, made in Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramic tableware region. The lapis colourway is a deep, mineral blue, named after lapis lazuli, which makes pale and green food look especially fresh.
How big is a 150mm rice bowl?
Larger than an everyday Japanese rice bowl, which is usually around 110 to 120mm across. At 150 x 70mm it takes a donburi or poke bowl comfortably. For a standard serving of plain rice, the 118 x 55mm lapis shallow rice bowl is the smaller option.
