This Mino ware soba bowl is 190mm across and 80mm high, holds 1080ml and is decorated with a lapis-blue arabesque in the Ryukyu style. That is a generous capacity for a single serving of noodles in broth, with space left for tempura, egg or greens on top.

How to Use

Soba bowls are made to hold hot noodles in plenty of broth, so capacity matters more than width. The Ryukyu name looks south to Okinawa, once the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose pottery (yachimun) is known for bold, generous decoration. The arabesque is karakusa (唐草), the scrolling vine pattern that travelled to Japan along the Silk Road and has been a favourite on Japanese tableware ever since. This piece is Mino ware, made in Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramic tableware region. The lapis colourway is a deep, mineral blue, named after lapis lazuli, which makes pale and green food look especially fresh.

Is there a rust version?
Yes. The same 1080ml soba bowl is arriving in the rust colourway on the same container.
Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
