This Mino ware noodle bowl is 240mm across and 75mm high, decorated with a rust-coloured arabesque in the Ryukyu style. It is wide and generous, so noodles, broth and toppings all have room.

The Ryukyu name looks south to Okinawa, once the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose pottery (yachimun) is known for bold, generous decoration. The arabesque is karakusa (唐草), the scrolling vine pattern that travelled to Japan along the Silk Road and has been a favourite on Japanese tableware ever since. This piece is Mino ware, made in Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramic tableware region.
