This Mino ware rice bowl is 118mm across and 55mm high, decorated with a rust-coloured arabesque in the Ryukyu style. It is the standard rice-bowl size, shallow enough to eat from easily with chopsticks.

The Ryukyu name looks south to Okinawa, once the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose pottery (yachimun) is known for bold, generous decoration. The arabesque is karakusa (唐草), the scrolling vine pattern that travelled to Japan along the Silk Road and has been a favourite on Japanese tableware ever since. This piece is Mino ware, made in Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramic tableware region. The rust colourway takes its warmth from iron-red tones, which suit grilled, braised and golden food.
What is the difference between this and the 150mm rice bowl?
Size and use. This 118 x 55mm bowl is the everyday rice bowl for a set meal. The 150 x 70mm bowl is larger and deeper, for donburi and soups. Both carry the same rust arabesque.

Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?
We are waiting on the maker's care guidance and will add it here before the stock lands, so we are not going to guess. Until it arrives, hand washing in warm soapy water with a soft sponge is the safe choice for glazed Japanese tableware. Let it dry fully before stacking or putting it away.
