Satsuma Sleepy Owl The Harmonics Aged Barley Shochu, 39%, 720ml
A limited blend of long-aged barley shochu, built on a seven-year Limousin oak base and finished with a 38-year-old spirit.
Pre-order: arriving in the UK in early November 2026
Sleepy Owl "The Harmonics" is a limited release from Satsuma Shuzō of Makurazaki, Kagoshima. It blends several aged barley shochu spirits: the base has spent seven years in French Limousin oak, the wood traditionally used for Cognac and brandy, and the blend includes a spirit aged for 38 years. The maker describes a rich, cask-driven aroma with a pleasant fruitiness, blended for balance. Under Japanese liquor law it is classed as a liqueur. 39% ABV, 720ml.
Why Chefs Choose This
- Long-aged: a seven-year oak-aged base with a 38-year-old component is rare in shochu.
- Limousin oak: the same French oak that shapes Cognac gives it a rich, rounded cask character.
- A sipping spirit: at 39% it stands up neat or on the rocks, like a whisky or brandy.
- Limited release: a special bottle for a digestif list or a gift.
How to Serve
- Neat: in a small tulip glass, to follow the cask aroma.
- On the rocks: over one large piece of ice.
- Highball: with chilled soda water for a longer drink.
- After dinner: in place of a brandy or aged rum.
Satsuma Shuzō is based at Makurazaki in Kagoshima, one of Japan's great shochu regions. "The Harmonics" is its series of long-aged blends, which the maker describes as a lullaby played by the combined skills of its craftspeople, hence the sleeping animals on the labels. Sleepy Owl is the barley expression; Sleepy Elephant uses rice shochu, and there is also a Sleepy Bear.

Why is it classed as a liqueur?
Japanese liquor tax law sets tight rules on what can be labelled honkaku shochu. The Harmonics blends are based on barley shochu, but because of how they are made they fall outside those rules, so Satsuma Shuzō sells them in Japan as a liqueur (リキュール). It is not sweetened like a fruit liqueur; in the glass it drinks like an aged spirit.

What does Sleepy Owl taste like?
Satsuma Shuzō describes a rich aroma from the oak and a pleasant fruitiness, blended for harmony. Expect the toasty grain of barley shochu under Cognac-style oak, with the depth that very old spirit brings to a blend.
How is it different from Sleepy Elephant?
Both are limited blends in Satsuma Shuzō's Harmonics series. Sleepy Owl is based on barley shochu, at 39% ABV. Sleepy Elephant is based on rice shochu with a 25-year oak-aged base and a 49-year-old component, at 32% ABV.
