Takahashi Sauce Country Harvest Tomato Ketchup, 300g
Japanese tomato ketchup from Takahashi Sauce, for the dishes that only taste right with it: omurice, Napolitan and chicken rice.
Pre-order: arriving in the UK in mid October 2026
This is tomato ketchup from Takahashi Sauce's Country Harvest range, in a 300g pack. Takahashi Sauce is a Japanese sauce maker, and Country Harvest is its line of ketchups and sauces. In Japan, ketchup is a cooking ingredient as much as a table sauce, and it is at the centre of yōshoku, the Western-style home cooking that grew up in Japanese cafés and kitchens.
Why Chefs Choose This
- Made for yōshoku: the ketchup to use when a Japanese recipe calls for ketchup.
- Japanese maker: from Takahashi Sauce, a specialist sauce producer.
- Cooks as well as it dips: fried into rice or reduced into a sauce, it carries the dish.
- Handy size: a 300g pack for the pass or the café counter.
How to Use
- Omurice: fry into chicken rice, wrap in a soft omelette, then finish with a line of ketchup on top.
- Napolitan: toss with spaghetti, onion, green pepper and sausage in a hot pan.
- Hambāgu sauce: mix with Worcestershire-style sauce and pan juices for a hamburg steak.
- At the table: with katsu, korokke, chips and fried chicken.
Yōshoku (洋食) means Western food, but in practice it means Japan's own versions of it: omurice, hambāgu, korokke, curry rice and spaghetti Napolitan. Many of these dishes lean on tomato ketchup. Omurice is chicken rice fried with ketchup under an omelette, and Napolitan is spaghetti fried in ketchup rather than sauced with tomatoes. Using a Japanese ketchup is the easy way to get these dishes to taste the way they do in a Tokyo kissaten.
What is Napolitan spaghetti?
A Japanese café classic. Cooked spaghetti is fried in a pan with sliced onion, green pepper, mushrooms and sausage or ham, then tossed with tomato ketchup until the ketchup caramelises and coats every strand. It is sweet, tangy and a little smoky from the pan, and it is usually finished with grated cheese. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with Naples.

Why use a Japanese ketchup?
Japanese yōshoku recipes are written around Japanese ketchup, and ketchups differ from brand to brand in sweetness, acidity and body. If you are cooking omurice or Napolitan for a Japanese menu, a Japanese ketchup gets you closer to the dish as it is served in Japan.
How do I make ketchup rice for omurice?
Fry diced chicken and onion in butter, add cooked rice and break it up, then stir in ketchup a spoonful at a time until the rice is evenly coloured and just starting to catch. Season with salt and pepper, shape it on the plate and cover with a soft omelette.
